PENTECOST SUNDAY
JUNE 8, 2014 - HIGHLANDS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

WELCOME

PRELUDE I Sing Praises/Let There Be Glory arr. Carol Tornquist

INVOCATION from Deut 6 & Levit 19 (Liturgists words; Congregation’s words)
Let’s gather to remember the Source of our being and our strength and our hope;
and let us gather to help one another open to the Spirit of God
with all our heart & mind & soul & strength.
Let us gather to remember our oneness with our neighbors;
and let us gather to help one another love our neighbors as ourselves.
Let us gather to remember that God loves each of us, every one;
and let us gather to be helped to love ourselves, for we are children of God.
Today we gather to be restored and transformed by the Spirit’s grace and truth.
Come, Holy Spirit.

*HYMN 455 (1-5) All Creatures of Our God and King

SCRIPTURE from Mark 16, Luke 24, and Matthew 28
The word of God; Thanks be to God.

CONTEMPLATION Canon in D minor A. Scriabin

PRAYERS OF HOPE with The Lord’s Prayer
Liturgist: Loving God who makes us new,
Women: who forgives our debts, restores our souls, and brings us home,
Men: we wake today in you and as your children pray in hope:
Women: that the poor will find heaven;
Men: that the mourners will be comforted;
Women: that the famished will be filled;
Men: that the good will find goodness;
Women: that we will love our enemies;
Men: that all will be perfected in your love.
Liturgist: And so we pray in hope as your son has taught us:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen

* Asterisk indicates an opportunity to stand if you would.
ASSURANCE
I have created you in eternal covenant:
where you loose from bondage, you will be free;
where you bind up with love, you will be loved;
where you forgive as I forgive, with endless grace,
you will be blest and blessing.

PRAYERS OF CARING for those in need of our prayers and caring

OFFERING Rejoice, the Lord Is King arr. Lloyd Larson

PRAYER OF THANKS
May our hearts be lifted.
We lift up our hearts in God’s light.
We give thanks for all who live the holy way and seek a heavenly world.
We give thanks for those who share the gifts of life
so we all may do more wondrous things to bless our world,
with the power of God’s holy Spirit, Amen

SCRIPTURE from John 20 and 21
The word of God; Thanks be to God.

*HYMN 376 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

SCRIPTURE from Acts of the Apostles (according to Luke)
The word of God; Thanks be to God.

SERMON DREAMS AND ASCENSION

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH drawn from Psalm 104 and the Presbyterian Confessions
Vast and present Spirit, you have brought us through the generations to this time and place;
now we seek your power and truth to shape our faith as trustworthy guide.
How manifold your works upon the earth and in the sea,
teeming with life for generations before us and for generations to come;
to every creature its season to flourish in the world,
to every creature its times to return to you and be renewed.
Your grace and truth shines from all Creation
and in its glory we rejoice.
and share our faith:
All-Gracious One, in life and in death you are with us:
As Source you give us being and life;
as Spirit you bring us power in grace and truth;
as Savior you show us the way to love and peace and joy,
which only needs that we fulfill.
