Highlands Once and Now and Future
Highlands was once a large congregation, when Gainesville was mainly centered downtown. It was a traditional Presbyterian congregation, rooted in the Protestant Reform tradition, dedicated to Christ’s Gospel of love for God and neighbor, committed to serving the common good, and inspired by great pastoral and congregational leadership. In time, Gainesville’s demographic shift affected Highlands and the congregation dwindled in size, though not in passion or compassion. Today, those who persisted with faith, hope and caring for Highlands’ spiritual community are seeing new vitality in our congregation and our neighborhoods. In keeping with our Reformation heritage, we recognize that God’s spirit is always revealing new truths. In that spirit, we are here to love and learn and serve, excluding no one from our care.
